What Is a First Article Inspection?
A First Article Inspection (FAI) is a comprehensive check of the initial production samples to confirm that the manufacturing process can consistently deliver a product that meets all specified requirements. It is typically carried out before mass production begins.
Catching non-conformities at this stage is dramatically cheaper than discovering them in a full production run — or worse, after shipment.
When Do You Need an FAI?
- First order from a new supplier
- New product or significant design change
- Returning to a supplier after a long gap
- Transfer of production to a different facility
- Change in critical raw materials or components
FAI Report Contents
- Dimensional report against engineering drawings
- Material and finish verification
- Functional and performance testing
- Cosmetic and workmanship assessment
- Packaging and labelling review
- Photographic documentation of every characteristic
